Spring Remodel Checklist

March is when kitchen remodel season quietly begins.
Not with demolition—with decisions. And the truth is, most delays don’t come from construction… they come from last-minute changes, missing specs, and ordering “almost right” items that create domino effects later.
If you’re hoping to renovate this spring or summer, here’s the checklist we walk through with our clients to keep projects smooth, efficient, and genuinely enjoyable.
1) Define your non-negotiables (before you pick finishes)
Start with clarity:
What must your kitchen do better than it does today?
What are your top 3 priorities (storage, seating, cooking, entertaining, etc.)?
Where are you flexible?
This prevents “pretty decisions” from outranking “life decisions.”
2) Confirm what’s staying—and what’s moving
Before you fall in love with cabinetry styles, decide:
Are you keeping the same layout?
Moving plumbing (sink, dishwasher)?
Moving gas/venting (range)?
Changing doorways, walls, windows, or openings?
Layout choices impact everything that follows.
3) Lock in appliance specs early
Appliances determine cabinet sizes, clearances, and sometimes even electrical needs.
At minimum, confirm:
Exact model numbers (or exact sizes)
Venting requirements for the range
Panel-ready vs. stainless
Microwave placement (drawer vs. built-in vs. over-range)
This step saves you from expensive “oops” moments mid-design.
4) Choose your cabinetry door style + construction direction
This is where your kitchen’s look really takes shape.
Decisions to make:
Door style (shaker, slab, inset, etc.)
Paint vs. stain vs. mixed finishes
Overall vibe: warm, crisp, moody, coastal, modern—whatever feels like you
5) Build a storage plan around how you actually live
A beautiful kitchen that doesn’t store your real life becomes frustrating fast.
Think through:
What needs to live near the range? (spices, oils, utensils)
What needs to live near prep? (knives, boards, mixing bowls)
What needs to live near cleanup? (trash, recycling, dishwasher unloading)
Pantry needs: snacks, small appliances, broom/utility storage
6) Decide your sink setup (it affects function more than people realize)
Questions we ask:
One main sink or a prep/bar sink too?
Single bowl or divided?
Where does the “mess” belong—on an island, under a window, or tucked away?
Sink placement affects traffic flow and how the kitchen feels day to day.
7) Map your lighting plan in layers
We recommend planning lighting in three layers:
Ambient: recessed or general ceiling lighting
Task: under-cabinet lighting for prep
Accent: pendants/sconces + dimmers for mood
Lighting is one of the fastest ways to make a kitchen feel “high-end and intentional.”
8) Plan outlets + charging like a modern household
This is where function meets sanity:
Outlet locations that don’t clutter the backsplash
Charging drawers or hidden charging zones
Dedicated circuits where needed (appliances, specialty features)
9) Choose countertops with your lifestyle in mind
The “best” countertop is the one that fits how you live.
Decide:
Material direction (quartz, natural stone, etc.)
Edge style + thickness
Waterfall or standard
Maintenance comfort level (low-maintenance vs. patina-friendly)
10) Decide flooring and sequencing
Flooring impacts cabinet height, transitions, and sometimes timeline.
Confirm:
Are you replacing flooring in the kitchen only, or beyond?
Will floors go in before cabinets or after? (depends on material + scope)
11) Pick hardware early (yes, really)
Hardware isn’t just “the last fun thing.” It affects:
the look (jewelry of the kitchen)
the feel (daily comfort)
and sometimes the cabinet order if you’re choosing specialty sizes
If you want a cohesive look, selecting hardware with intention is key—and it’s something we help clients do in our showroom.
12) Create a realistic ordering + install plan
Cabinetry, fixtures, and specialty items can have lead times—so March planning is a huge advantage.
A smooth project usually means:
finalize selections
place orders
confirm delivery windows
then schedule installation and trades around real dates (not guesses)
Bonus: Set up your “temporary kitchen” plan
Before demo day, plan your essentials:
coffee maker
microwave/toaster oven
paper goods
a simple dishwashing setup
It makes the remodel feel manageable.
